A letter from Venezuela to Europe or the US normally takes 10 days - 2 weeks to arrive, but there are many exceptions. Some mail takes 6 weeks or more, if it arrives at all. Mailboxes are difficult to find, so always take your letters and parcels to the local mail office (IPOSTEL), and try to send mail from major tourist towns. For important mail, either use a courier or send it registered/certified (certificado).

CANTV is Venezuela´s national telephone company and it has a modern, efficient telephone network. Making international phone calls is not a problem, but is very expensive. In some touristy cities there are private offices that offer cheaper international phone calls via call back systems.

There are plenty of public telephones in Venezuela, even in the more remote places, all of which accept CANTV cards only (tarjeta CANTV). Credit cards are not accepted. Telephone cards are available for 2000 and 5000Bs (the latter enough for a three minute call to Europe) and can be purchased from CANTV offices and most supermarkets and souvenir shops. However, if you are travelling to a more remote area and will want to make a call, it is wise to buy a card beforehand and take it with you.

The international code for Venezuela is 58. For international calls from Venezuela, dial 00+country code.

CANTV has an information system that can be accessed by the number 103. Some of the operators speak English.

AG00062_.gif (7566 bytes) The Internet

In some major cities there are internet cafés or agencies that offer internet services. However, as the internet in Venezuela is just beginning, these establishments might be difficult to find and prices are still quite high. Travel agencies might let you use their internet connection, and some marinas also offer an internet service.
